O2: Not Just A Mobile Phone Provider

Telefónica O2 is a leader in providing mobile, broadband and fixed telecommunication services. The company has branches in the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

Essential for Life

BT Cellnet’s brand was later on changed to O2 (or written with 2 as a subscript just like the chemical symbol for oxygen) in order to represent it as an essential service. This applied to all other businesses under the Telefónica group except for Manx Telecom. The Lambie-Nairn design agency was responsible for the change in the groups’ image.

The idea behind this is the belief that the services supplied by the company was essential which is comparable to how oxygen is needed to sustain life.  Company graphics such as the logo and other advertising supplements made use of air bubbles and focused on light, airy colors such as blue. Jonathan Knowles is the London-based photographer behind the company’s iconic air bubbles.

Exclusive Perks

The company’s marketing plan involves several exclusivity deals with the company’s various sponsorships in the fields of music, sports and entertainment. This encourages a steady loyalty from their subscribers and serves as a means to be globally recognized as well.

One of the perks for subscribers was a two-year long exclusivity deal with Apple regarding the rights to distribute the 3G iPhone in the United Kingdom and in Ireland. The deal ended last October 2009 but users still have a lot more exclusive perks to look forward to such as being coached by golf masters such as Ian Polter, Colin Montgomerie and Retief Goosen as well as priority tickets for concerts held in the O2 Arena.

A Myriad of Services

Be Unlimited, an internet service provider was purchased by the Telefónica O2 group. Afterwards, an O2 Broadband service, which was the first to utilize the Be Network’s ADSL2+ connection, was launched and the service was offered at discount for their existing mobile phone subscribers.

An SMS MMS backup service was offered to Telefónica O2’s clients via the O2 Bluebook service. O2 Bluebook is free to use and covers messages both outgoing and incoming.

The O2 Money service is a debit system that is offered exclusively to O2 clients. It is a Visa debit card which gives users the ability to pre-load their card with money and enables them to receive information regarding their current balance via live updates through text messages.

For younger subscribers, a Load and Go card is a debit card which functions much like the O2 Money service but has a £1,800 transaction limitation per year. O2 Retail Store s, UK e-Pay, Paypoint as well as the O2 Money website may be used to transfer money to the Load and Go Card.

The O2 Joggler is a device which allows effective time management through an interactive calendar app which can be updated directly on the Joggler device or online. It is also able to display images, play videos and stream music with the use of Wi-Fi or its Ethernet cable as well as provide weather and traffic updates.
