Worried about cell phone radiation? You probably heard or read on the media about studies after studies that connect the radiofrequency signals emitted by mobile phones to health issues like cancer or some other disease.. But not all news is bad news. There are other reports on the opposite side of the argument that that these mobile devices are perfectly safe. Which ones should you believe? However, until there is a clear consensus on the issue, the prudent approach is to take some precautions. There are some compelling studies that deserve attention.
One study that got some attention, especially from the male population, is the Cleveland Clinic study in 2007 that found frequent use of the mobile phone can cause male infertility. Men who make calls four or more hours a day were found to have poorer sperm quality compared to those who don’t. In a more recent research, the same team published a study in Fertility & Sterility that explored this finding further. They found that sperm samples exposed to a cell phone while in ‘talk’ mode had a higher levels of free radicals as well as lower levels of antioxidants compared to samples that were not exposed to the radiation . The exposed sperm had reduced function, motility and overall health. This requires further investigation, but there is enough evidence to warrant a warning to men to keep the cell phones away from their pelvic area, especially if they’re planning to start a family.
The developing tissues of their bodies and brains and their thinner skulls make children more prone to being seriously affected. The latency period for cancer development can take ten years or more, so the cumulative effects of radiation damage may not show up until a decade or more from today. Governments and health experts are being made aware of this, and some countries are either imposing bans or restrictions on children and teenagers under 18 from using the cell phone.
Swedish research led by Prof. Leif Salford found that microwave radiation from mobile phones damages brain cells, possibly leading to early development of Alzheimer’s disease. The study was done on rats, and the areas of the brain damaged by the radiofrequency radiation are linked with memory, learning and movement. There is yet to have any conclusive evidence that cell phones damage the human brain cells, but the research suggests there was good reason to believe that they could have the same effect on humans.
American epidemiologist Devra Davis, author of a book on cell phone radiation and health entitled Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family, .called on all lawmakers in Ontario to support a private member’s bill that would warn people of potential danger of mobile phone radiation. She even pointed out that the fine print in mobile phone manufacturers’ warnings in user manuals that say to keep the phone up to an inch away from the body. Dr. Davis emphasized that she is not against using cell phones, but she just wants people to use them more responsibly and intelligently.
