With strategic alliances between AT&T Cell Phones and Dell, The smart phone era is really only just beginning. This can be evidenced by a number of things but the most recent news was Google making the NexusOne phone. While that has stolen the headlines there is more evidence that the world is going the way of the smart phone. That can be seen with Dell, the PC maker, launching a new division to head give a bigger push into the smart phone industry.
The company’s smart phone division is headed by Ron Garriques current head of Dell’s consumer division and a former Motorola Cell Phones executive. Dell says that they will be releasing a smart phone for AT&T Cell Phones using Google’s android software. The move marks another big name company looking to make a splash in the cell phone and more specifically, smart phone industry. This all comes after shifts within the company’s goals and personnel. For example, Michael Dell retook position of CEO for the company in 2007 with a plan to transform the company out of the PC market and direct towards other technologies such as smart phones and cell phones in general.
What does this mean for consumers? It is unclear at this point but more than likely it means more competition on the cell and smart phone market which likely means more products to choose from for customers. Not only this, but it can mean new ideas and technology built-in to these already remarkable hand-held devices. Furthermore, the more competition can drive down prices and make smart phones that much more accessible for the average consumer.
My guess is that Dell will go the way of business applicable phones rather than multimedia with ATT Cell Phones. The multimedia route is very saturated at this point while the business phones haven’t made any memorable progress since Blackberry devices started dominating the scene. In addition, Dell just seems like a more business oriented company and if they learned anything from the computing world, they will not be able to keep up with Apple in terms of multimedia and design functions. So business is the logical route and a good one for them. However it remains to be seen what they actually do with ATT Cell Phones.
I think more competition in fields of technology are always good and make for excellent products for consumers. Being a well established company should bode well for them and the smart phone is a great stepping stone for them out of PCs and into new technologies.
